Once a literal diamond in the rough, the Island Country Club was the sales catalyst for the Deltona Corporation’s mid-1960s development of single family homes and condominiums on Marco Island. Operating as a public golf facility for the next 20 years, its status changed in September 1986, when a group of 400 members bought the club and turned it private.

When Ken Venturi announced six years ago that he was leaving Marco Island for his home state of California, he said he was going “full circle.’’ On Monday, that circle came back around again. Venturi, the 76-year-old former U.S. Open champion and longtime CBS Sports golf analyst, was back for the 19th Bill Owen Golf Classic at Eagle Creek Country Club near Marco Island.

The Merrill Lynch Shootout has traded in Tiffany for the peacock this year. Greg Norman’s unofficial PGA Tour event will be shown by NBC Sports on Saturday and Sunday for the first time. CBS Sports had telecast the previous 18 Shootouts. The move was made as part of the tour’s new television contract.

Marco Island resident Tee McCabe advanced to the PGA Tour Qualifying School Finals by finishing in a tie for eighth in Second Stage qualifying at Lake Jovita Country Club on Saturday. McCabe, who played this season on the Nationwide Tour, shot a final-round 71 to finish at 10-under par. The top 20 and ties advanced to the finals.
