Then come on out to Carvel Ice Cream Shop at 609 8th Street South (across from Cambier Park) from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 10, for its Dog Day Sundae fundraiser to benefit The Collier County Humane Society. In addition, adoptable dogs from the Humane Society will be on hand for viewing and adoption.
Adopt a cat this June
Lee County Domestic Animal Services remind residents that kitten season is under way, typically running from May through November, and has proclaimed June Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, and has reduced the fee from $50 to $20 for cat adoptions through the entire month. All adoptions include spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations appropriate for the cat's age, flea treatment, worming, test for feline AIDS and leukemia, and a nationally-registered microchip. In addition, animal services continues to encourage pet owners to sterilize their pets to control the unwanted pet population.
In addition, The Humane Society is celebrating by offering all cats for adoption at half-price in throughout the month. For senior cats (10 years and older) that comes to $17.50; for adult cats (16 weeks through 9 years) the fee goes down to $27.50; for kittens (under 16 weeks) adoption fees drop to $37.50.
Father's Day discounts at Lee Animal Services
Lee County Animal Services is celebrating Father's Day by offering adoption discounts on pets from June 10-17. Dogs are available for $30, and cats are $20, and anyone may benefit from the discount, not just dads! All adoptions include spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations appropriate for the pet's age, flea treatment, worming, test for feline AIDS and leukemia for cats and a nationally-registered microchip and a training DVD for dogs. Pups n' Books at Collier Library
The Humane Society of Collier County pets will be participating in the Pups n' Books children's reading program at the Collier County Library headquarters from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 17. The program is designed to help children who are shy about reading aloud in front of people. It has been discovered that many children with such a problem find it easy to read aloud to pets. The confidence and experience they gain by reading aloud to pets can then be applied to help them overcome their fears about reading in front of people. Anyone who would like to learn more or enroll their children in the program should contact Pamela Moore at the Collier County Library at 593-0870.
Discount microchipping at Lee Humane Society
The Humane Society of Lee County will offer pet microchipping for $10 through the month of June, in an effort to curb the amount of displaced pets this hurricane season. All pets in the community may benefit from the discount. A microchip contains all of the information necessary to returning a lost pet, and registration is kept in databases that are available 24 hours a day. For more information on pet microchipping, call the Humane Society at 332-0364.
Prepare for hurricanes this June and July
With the dramatic hurricane seasons of the last two years in mind, Lee County Animal Services is discounting the price of nationally registered microchip pet identification. During June and July the cost for the Microchip will be reduced by 40 percent to only $10. The microchip ID is a small computer chip about the size of a grain of rice that is implanted by injection under the animal's skin between the shoulder blades. Nearly all shelters and veterinarians have scanners that read the Microchip's unique number that identifies the owner. Permanent microchip identification is the best way to ensure that pet owners are located whenever their pets are lost. All pets with microchip IDs that came into animal services' shelter during the past two hurricane seasons were reunited with their owners.
In addition to microchip protection for pets, Animal Services is currently selling Pet Hurricane Kits. The kits include pet first aid items for treatment of wounds and minor illnesses that pets may experience plus additional items needed in case of a disaster. Emergency information for making plans for pets is also included. The kits are valued at $60 but will be sold for $30 during June and July. For more information, visit www.leelostpets.com or call 432-2083.
