While Bonita's young women were vying for the title Miss Bonita Springs 1976, two of the community's young men were off to Tallahassee for Boys State, courtesy of American Legion Post 303.
Mark Morgan and Marty Martinez were named by the Legion as the delegates to attend the 33rd session of the Florida American Legion Boys State. More than 500 students from throughout Florida were set to attend the event on the Florida State University campus.
Candidates were judged on character, courage, honesty, scholarship and physical fitness.
During the week on campus, boys would receive instruction in local and state government, participate in mock elections and sessions in legislature, and pick a governor, cabinet and supreme court.
Ten local women were competing for the title Miss Bonita Springs: Honey Browne, Shelly Cheatham, Darlene Herrington, Terry Konopka, Margaret Lowe, Diana McClain, Patty Parks, Mary Ann Raney, Sue Rogers and Teri Trew. The pageant, put on by the Bonita Springs Jaycees, was themed "A Summer Place" and was set for July 2 in the cafetorium of Bonita Springs Elementary School.
In other news, a second public hearing was set to discuss the renaming and renumbering of Old 41 in Bonita Springs.
This hearing was set in Collier County. Locals were urging state officials to identify the highway clearly so that tourist traffic wouldn't miss Bonita's original business district as it passed through town.
In the classifieds, a two-bedroom riverfront home in Stanton's Subdivision was priced at $36,200 and a golf course condominium in San Carlos Park was offered for $27,500.
An industrial lot near the dog track was advertised for $8,000 while a CBS home with 159 feet on the Imperial River was offered for $45,000.
A riverfront efficiency with a screened porch was renting for $175 a month and a duplex on Tangerine Drive was offered for $185 a month.
At the Trail Drive-In, Ryan O'Neal was starring in "Barry Lyndon," Ersula Blauth was featured in "Naked Countess," and Robert Mack was playing in "Superbug."
Out on the water, snook were being landed along the beaches and in the passes, Jo Sheffield of Vanderbilt Beach caught an 18 pound linesider at Wiggins Pass on shrimp.
