Footballers take to the beach
It was football practice Florida style when the Marco Eagles 90-pound team charged through the sand at Residents’ Beach.
Coaches Hector Diaz, Andrew Delgado, both Marco Police officers, Greg West, Brian Kocak, John Grisham and Jim Prange put the team through its paces.
The team actually has a lot of lesser weight players as it is a combination of footballers from 70 to 90 pounds. This season the Eagles will fill three teams, instead of five, to have more depth on each team. Last year teams battled the numbers. On average the Marco teams had 15 players at most for a game, while opposing teams easily doubled the Eagles’ numbers.
Delgado said the coaches decided to have a practice at Residents’ Beach to build leg strength with the kids by running and blocking in the sand. The team also performed agility drills.
“Running offensive plays helps players coming out of their stances for blocking and running, while strengthening the defense,” Delgado said.
The Eagles open their season in mid-August. The 90-pound team has been practicing for three weeks, Monday through Friday, from 5 to 7 p.m. When school starts it will be cut back to two days a week.
Classic Transportation provided a van to take players to and from the beach beginning at its temporary practice site, Eddie Rua Memorial Field off Winterberry Drive.
