Convicted drug offender gets jail term for leaving Collier County

A Golden Gate Estates man arrested last summer on charges he intentionally killed a kitten by throwing it against a wall was sentenced Friday to six months in the Collier County jail for violating his probation on prior drug charges.

Circuit Judge Elizabeth Krier found Emanus Lansiquot of 931 22nd St. S.E. guilty of two felony drug possession charges and revoked his probation, sentencing him to two concurrent terms of six months in jail.

Krier also suspended his driver license for two years, as the law requires.

Court records show Lansiquot, 22, had been arrested twice before — in 2002 and 2005 — on charges of driving with a suspended or revoked license and he pleaded no contest both times. An adjudication of guilt was withheld on both, meaning his criminal record showed no conviction because he successfully completed sentencing terms, including taking a class and paying court and prosecution costs and fines.

He was in court Friday because he violated his probation in March by driving outside of Collier County without getting permission from the probation office.

“This was unfortunate,” said his defense attorney, Janeice Martin. “He had a family emergency and left the county. Technically, he needed to call probation.”

The violation involved a 2004 drug case in which Lansiquot was arrested on nine felony drug charges, including two counts of felony drug possession involving marijuana and cocaine, drug paraphernalia and drug possession with intent to sell. All except the top drug possession charges were dropped.

On June 22, 2005, he pleaded no contest to both and was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to attend a substance abuse class and undergo random drug testing. An adjudication of guilt was withheld if he successfully completed probation.

But the crime involving the kitten’s death occurred just five days before probation was completed, so he was charged with a violation of probation.

Rona Villard, of 1050 Albany Court, East Naples, told Collier County sheriff’s deputies she’d been dating Lansiquot for about a week when he called her on June 18, 2006, and said he was waiting for her inside her home. When she arrived with her four children, Lansiquot was sitting on her couch and accused her of cheating on him.

Then he attempted to leave, but she asked him to stay and talk.

Reports say he threatened to kill her daughter if she didn’t allow him to leave. She placated him by saying he wouldn’t kill her daughter, because he loved her too much. Reports say Lansiquot replied: “Fine, then I will kill her cat.”

Villard told deputies that Lansiquot grabbed her daughter’s orange and white kitten and threw it against the kitchen wall as her children, ages 4 to 9, watched. She said the kitten was bleeding from the mouth and nose, and shook before becoming lifeless.

He was charged with a felony count of intentional cruelty to animals. Records at the time listed his name as Emaus.

But on Feb. 27, Villard came to court to testify he didn’t kill the kitten, so Assistant State Attorney Christopher Klink was forced to drop the charge, which was dismissed in court.

Martin’s law partner, defense attorney Jerry Berry, represented Lansiquot at the time.

“He was innocent,” Berry said Friday. “She testified another person was there and did it.”

Berry said Villard was afraid of the person who did it and was mad at Lansiquot, so she accused him.

He added: “He’s not guilty, so he shouldn’t be convicted.”
