The Marco Eagles showed improvement on all three teams in losing efforts on Saturday in Miami Xtreme Youth Football League action.

In the 90-pound game, the Leisure City Modello Timberwolves scored two quick touchdowns then the Eagles took over the game, but not the final score, 19-7 Timberwolves.

Quarterback Cole Stretton had four pass completions to Andy Delgado and Cayden Couture made a key fumble recovery that led to the Eagles score on a quarterback sneak by Stretton. Cody Young ran for the extra point, making the game 13-7 Timberwolves at half time.

“This was the best defensive effort of the year for our team,” said Greg West, assistant coach. “Cayden, Cody and Hector Diaz were great on defense and our offensive line showed much improvement. Most of them are first-year kids and have really developed.”

The Eagles 115-pound team played very well defensively but a few miscues led to a 19-0 defeat at the hands of the Tamiami Colts.

“The game was played more like the teams were on a tough battlefield,” coach Mike Snyder said. “We held them to a measly 37 yards rushing, but two passing plays and an interception gave them the win.”

The Eagles best drive came in the second half when they marched down to Colts 10-yard line. However, the Colts picked off an Eagles pass and scored their final touchdown.

Defensively, a big play was made by Adam Hurdis. While sacking the Colts quarterback he ripped the ball away, stopping a Colts drive.

Leading the Eagle defense was Kyle Mitchusson with seven tackles, Julian Alicia, six, Hurdis and Liam Hollowsky, five each and Cole Cleary with four.

“We played a great defense against the running game, we just need to be prepared for quick passes, something we’ll be working on this week,” Snyder said.

In the Eagles 125-pound game, the Eagles scored on their first drive, but couldn’t hold the South Miami Gray Ghosts, losing 31-7.

Coach Steve Schneider said the game started off promising.

“We received the ball and drove down the field, scoring on a great pass from Luke Bergen to Kit Fowler. The extra point was scored by Sawyer Hauk.”

However, the Ghosts came charging back, also scoring on their first drive. The Ghosts dominated the game from that point on, Schneider said, although some improvement was noted.

“Key players in the game were Robert Thompson, Dane Stretton and Brandon Drake, who stepped up to play lineman and did a great job,” Schneider said.

All the teams travel to Miami this weekend to play Doral. The Eagles finish their season next week, traveling to play the Naples Titans.
