My eyes have seen the glory of the swimming of the ducks — I have seen the 13th running of Miss Dottie’s Duck Derby and it was great!
The ducks were patiently awaiting their turn to race down their pool lane and emerge victorious, the crowd cheered energetically for their favorites which was kind of hard to do as the ducks all looked alike.
The ducks were divided into three categories: regular, corporate and celebrity. After all the ducks finished their races, the winners were announced.
Corporate duck winning sponsor was M&I Bank. The Celebrity duck winner was YMCA Customer Service rep, Lil Bardon. Third place winner was Robin Casio of Naples, second place went to Virginia Corrivean of Marco Island and the first place winner was Harriet Swartz of Marco Island.
A special thanks to all the volunteers and YMCA Board members Dale Rod and Ann Henegan who assisted, the Marco Island Fire Department, Marco Island city councilor Jerry Gibson , Debra Saunders of the Marco Island Police Foundation, Cheryl Ferrara, Tom Cretella and the 2008 YMCA Corporate Sponsors especially the Marriott Vacation Club.
Spring Camp at the “Y” started on Monday and what an exciting week of activities were enjoyed by the attendees! From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. the campers were busy with something to do, go to or work on. Activities included such games as “Twenty Questions”, Limbo dancing, musical chairs, William Tell relay races and exciting and educational trips to the Aquatic Center and Golden Gate Community Park. All in all, it was a good week and a good preview of how 2008 Summer Camp will be like.
Registrations are still being taken for the following activities: 2008 summer camp, spring soccer, swim lessons with Miss Dottie from April 7 to 17, the Half to Halloween Dance and the Teen Social scheduled for April 18.
The next Healthy Life Lecture series will be on April 8 at Mackle Park , co-sponsored by the YMCA.
Shark of the Park Round 4 is slated for April 20 at the Skate park.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is April 25 and 26. I’m the emcee for that event.
Don’t forget about Taste of Marco scheduled for April 25 at the Esplanade from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Enjoy good food, drink and entertainment provided by Myles Loud. I will be the host and emcee and DJ Tony D of Jukebox Productions, a 2008 Friend of the Y Sponsor will be entertaining folks at the entrance gate.
The admission is still only $5 and kids 12 and under get in free. Food and drink tickets are sold in $1 increments. There will be a special kids area. Early admission tickets will be available at the Customer Service desk.
If you would like to volunteer for this major event please let me know and I will be happy to have you with us at this event.
