On his fourth try, Rick Assini won the Eagle Creek Golf and Country Club Annual Men’s Championship.

His three-day total of 235 edged out Mike Triplett at 240.

On the final round a windy day, and aggressive hole locations, saw only one person, Mike Triplett, break 80.

Going into the final day Assini had a six-shot lead over Dave Robertson, an eight-stroke lead over Robert Marx and a seven-stroke lead over Triplett, all playing in the same foursome.

“It was a real grind,” Assini said of the final round. “With the wind, tight fairways and aggressive pin placements it got really tense. I worried about every shot as nothing came easy.”

Assini’s lead was down to two after six holes and just three after 12.

“I just hung in,” Assini said.

Assini had other chances to win the title. He held the lead going into the final day three years ago “until I played like I was in a train wreck,” he said. Two years ago he lost in sudden-death on the 19th hole to Bob Cornell.

“My first two rounds (this year) I played well, having the best scores,” he said. Both days he shot a 77. “It was good enough to help me out on the final day.”

In Flight 1 Ward Wettlaufer’s two-day total of 150 won easily over Bud Jennings, who carded a 167. The low net (handicap) winner was Bob Wells with a 168.

In Flight 2 Randy Van Alstine jumped to a seven-stroke lead after the first round, but skied to a 94 in the second, holding off John Carmany for the win. Van Alstine’s two-day total was 175 and Carmany’s 177. Low net winner was Tom Byrne at 179.

Grant Westerman and Jack Wright tied with a two-day score of 188 in Flight 3. Westerman was determined the winner by using a score card tie-breaker. Westerman had the best back-nine total to emerge the winner. Bill Krause won low net with 192.

In the Senior Men’s Club Championship Sam Borr registered a score of 175 in Flight 1 to win. Joseph Konie won the Flight 2 title with a 179. Ralph Ryan was low net winner in Flight 1 and Samuel Young in Flight 2.
