Collier County commissioners approved a federally-funded 2005 Supplemental Diaster Recovery Subgrant Agreement with the Florida Department of Community affairs.
The $2,814,698.15 grant will provide housing rehabilitation, hurricane preparedness assistance and community improvements for low-income communities affected by Hurricane Wilma.
“Collier County has now received more than $5 million in block grant funding through the DCA to provide assistance to communities that were hit hard by Hurricane Wilma,” said Commissioner Jim Coletta. “ ... The projects approved by the Board of County Commissioners will not only help repair hurricane-damaged homes and facilities but also assist in ‘hardening’ several properties as we prepare for the next hurricane that may come our way.”
The county took applications from 12 organizations requesting the funding.
“We are excited to work with income qualified households to help them prepare their homes for future storms,” said Housing and Human Services Director Marcy Krumbine. “Our DRI program can help by installing hurricane shutters, hurricane proof windows and doors, as well as improving the integrity of the roof. Together we are making homes in Collier County safer and repairing past damage.”
DRI funding is being made available for the following projects:
* I Hope — $300,000 to replace two hurricane-damaged homes with two new “green” homes
* Immokalee Non-Profit — $300,000 to rehabilitate hurricane-damaged recreation center
* St. Matthew’s House — $60,000 for hurricane hardening project $60,000
* Collier County Housing Development Corp — $75,000 for extension of sewer and water generator project
* Shelter for Abused Women and Children — $57,000 to purchase and install hurricane rated windows and doors for new transitional rental homes
* Front Porch — $500,000 for hardening of low income apartments, roof, windows and doors
* Collier County Housing Human Services/DRI — $1,438,257.21 to Rehab/replace owner-occupied and single-family homes with priority to Bayshore and Immokalee CRAs
