The Collier County state legislative delegation has appointed seven Islanders to serve on an advisory committee to study the proposed incorporation of Marco Island.
Selected from 18 applicants were Jane Paulus, Ira Evans, Elbert Tripp, Arthur Schultz, Walter Fischer, Norris Rhodes and L. Edward Stone. The advisory committee was created after the legislative delegation refused a request by pro-incorporation forces to place the question on the November general election ballot.
The delegation instead suggested a non-binding straw vote and the establishment of the committee to draw up the proposed charter. The City of Marco was incorporated in 1997.
Construction is expected to start soon on a new shopping boutique and office complex, located on Collier Boulevard, near Bald Eagle Drive. The shopping center will contain six boutiques on the ground level and six offices on the top level. Cost of the complex is estimated at $300,000.
Marco Island lost an old friend the other day in the death of Elliott J. Mackle. The oldest of the three Mackle brothers, who headed the Deltona Corporation and its subsidiary, the Marco Island Development Corporation, Elliott Mackle was truly a modern-day pioneer, who helped chart the course of Marco Island’s future as executive vice president and later as chairman of the board. He brought the great and near-great to show off Marco Island and make it known to the world. Mackle died April 12.
