The Cubs used the long ball to stay undefeated while handing the Marlins its first loss of the season in the Minor Division of the Marco Island Baseball League last week.
James Steele and Jonathan Irigoyen slammed home runs in the win.
Gage Wheeler homered for the White Sox. A game winning save was made on Wheeler’s next at bat as Irigoyen made a diving catch on Wheeler’s screaming line drive. Coach Andy Delgado said he was happy with his team’s performance.
In another Minor Division game, the Indians scored five runs in the first inning, on its way to an 8-2 win over the Dodgers.
Raul Rodriguez, Peter Servante and Cole Cleary all had key hits in the inning, with Cleary hammering a home run. Key defensive plays by the Indians were made by Andrew Smith, Paul Reisinger and Vincent Rives. Tyler Grisham pitched a strong game and Kevin Hennings, Marcus Seidman and Nolan Pole made key defensive plays for the Dodgers.
In Rookie Division game, the Yankees downed the White Sox, 5-1.
Hitting leaders for the Yankees were Brian Kocak, Mathew Keegan, Brian Laurent, Jay Vanderjagt and Michael Scola. Vanderjagt knocked in all five runs. Cameron Jones ended his hot hitting streak at 11, but still is 11-for-12 on the season. “We worked hard in practice on our defense and it paid off,” coach Brian Kocak said.
On Friday the Indians play the Marlins at 6:30 p.m. at the ball field behind Tommie Barfield Elementary.
