On April 16, the Lely High School Band left Naples at 7:30 p.m. and traveled through the night to Gatlinburg, Tenn.

The students were performing in the Fiesta Val Music Festival during the weekend. They arrived in the Gatlinburg area the next day around 1 p.m. and began to visit the many tourist areas that the city provides.

The band received an overall rating of “excellent” in the parade competition. Unfortunately, while the band enjoyed beautiful springtime weather in the Smoky Mountains, the students marched in pouring down rain during the parade. Shortly afterwards, it cleared again and turned out to be a beautiful day.

While in Tennessee, the band was able to visit Dollywood, watch the “Dixie Stampede Show,” ride the tram to Ober Gatlinburg Park, and attend the Memories Theater to watch the “Elvis and Friends Show.”

The students were also able to walk the parkway in Gatlinburg and eat at the Hardrock Café.

These were just a few of the highlights of the trip. Throughout their time in Gatlinburg, Lely students were able to experience the sights and sounds of Tennessee and the Smoky Mountain area.

Richard Stein, a freshman percussionist from Marco Island, said, “Overall the trip was great and some of the things were more exciting than had been expected.”

Taylor Crawford, a senior Guard member from Marco Island, added, “I loved the area and would possibly, someday, like to live there.”

Boyd Myers, a freshman clarinet player from Marco Island, said, “I was surprised that there was so much to do in the area.”
