Your News: Coletta to host public meeting to discuss Florida wildlife

Commissioner Jim Coletta is hosting a Public Information Meeting on Monday, April 28, 2008, 6:30 p.m., at Corkscrew Elementary School (1065 County Road 858, Naples, FL).

Biologists and other specialists from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will discuss predator biology and behavior, FWC policy and preventative measures to manage the ever-growing concerns that bears and panthers are posing to the welfare and well-being of Collier County citizens, pets, livestock, and property.

In March 2008, Defenders of Wildlife presented Commissioner Coletta with an award to recognize his instrumental help in getting information out to people about how to live responsibly with the Florida panther and other wildlife. He has helped organize and host town meetings on the subject on living with panthers since the work of protecting people, pets, livestock and panthers involves many partners from natural resource agencies, conservation organizations, 4-H families, the Extension Service, and local residents.

“I feel that it is my responsibility as Commissioner of District 5, to be the ‘Protector of the People,’ and provide opportunities for awareness and education of the possible dangers that could arise,” stated Commissioner Jim Coletta. “As a resident of Golden Gate Estates, I and many others have personally experienced difficulties because the bears are actually highly intelligent and ever-evolving. They continue to find innovative ways to look for food, destroying trash bins and other property in the process. I highly urge citizens to attend this meeting, as it concerns not only the inconvenience of property harm, but the risk of bodily harm. These animals aren’t going away, and like it or not, we must learn to live with them.”

All interested parties are invited to attend. Please do not hesitate to call the Commission office at 252-8097 with any questions.
