New reef fish gear rules take effect June 1, 2008 and many anglers may not be of the new rules.
Collier and Charlotte Counties Extension Service Departments with the University of Florida will host a Fisheries Workshop on the new fishing gear regulation for Gulf reef fish on Tuesday, May 6 at the North Collier Regional Park Exhibit Hall located at 15000 Livingston Rd. from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Changes to regulations include requirements to use non-stainless circle hooks when using natural baits, to have venting tools and also a dehooking device.
The workshop will include demonstrations of techniques that will help conserve our fishery by minimizing mortality associated with releasing fish that are not going to be harvested. Sea Grant Agents from both Extension Service Offices will discuss the new rules, demonstrate the use of the new required equipment and answer questions.
The fisheries workshop is free and open to the general public. Literature will also be distributed. These changes come as result of the Joint Reef Amendment 27/14 enacted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration geared towards reducing the overfishing of red snapper.
Come learn how to fish responsibly. For more information call, Bryan Fluech at (239) 438-5594.
