Shawn Hibbard of 3901 Upolo Lane in Naples of Boy Scout Troop 274 organized a drive for his Eagle Scout project on April 5 and 6 for the troops overseas to benefit the children of the war-torn countries of Iraq and Afghanistan.
He collected various school supplies including 788 crayons, composition and coloring books, markers, pens, and pencils, 109 lbs. of candy, 684 stuffed animals and 268 toys from the parishioners of St. Agnes Parish in Naples through the requests of the soldiers from "Any Soldier.com" website.
Many soldiers request these items because they are sponsoring schools, or are greeted by the locals with their children in tow. Numerous areas are poverty-stricken and this gives the troops an opportunity to interact with them. Shawn also received in excess of $2,200 from the generous parishioners which not only allowed him to cover shipping costs but also to purchase 120 phone cards for soldiers to call home.
After weeks of gathering information, collecting items, organizing, boxing, labeling and taping Shawn finally arrived Saturday at the Coco River Branch post office to be greeted by welcoming staff to be a part of completing Shawn's Eagle Scout project. After two hours of stamping and posting 112 boxes by postal employee, Sandy ??, the boxes were finally taken for shipment overseas to be distributed by the soldiers to the children.
