You decide on a name change for your restaurant; who better to canvas than your customers?

Adopting that approach, Curt and Jacquie Koon — who’ve owned Bayview restaurant at the Esplanade for the past five months — were showered with 520 responses.

Some names were kooky, some quirky and some already taken, but the Koons perused them all.

Who’s Your Daddy? didn’t make the cut, along with Hex on the Beach, Best of Luck, The Office, The Marco Swirl and Hungry Horizon.

Getting at least a second glance were The Galaxy (in a nod toward the octagonal StarBar outside), Frank’s, H20, while taken names such as Sunset Cove and the Dolphin had to be discarded.

In the end, the Koons came up with a short list, and are taking a vote on the names from now through Aug. 12.

They are:

Dock of the Bay; CJ’s on the Bay; CJ’s Landing; Dockside; Sundowner’s; CJ’s Bayview; CJ’s Dockside; Water’s Edge; Koon’s Cove and CJ’s Waterfront.

Curt Koon said the whole exercise had been constructive as well as fun.

“I think we may have over-served some people,” he said of one or two unprintable suggestions.

Anyone interested in having a say in the new name should e-mail their choice to bayview@palsplaces.com or stop in at the restaurant.

Jackie Koon said the new name will be unveiled in September along with a new expanded menu to round off the change.

Curt Koon said the name change is technically because after taking over the restaurant he would only have temporary rights to the logo, staff uniforms and interior decor.

Hence, he said, there’s quite a big change coming in those areas.

“We’re looking to close for a week in September (to do the interior revamp), but we’ll keep the outside bar open along with outdoor barbecue grilling,” he said.

Target re-opening date will be the customary “soft” approach some time around the end of September, with a grand opening the following month, Koon said.
