Wesley United Methodist Church will have their fourth Arts and Craft show Feb. 17 after the 9 a.m. service and the 10:30 a.m. service.
Bill Mosely will display pictures, cards and other items; Susan Patton, photographer, will be there as well as Emmy Griscoe, who will bring jewelry and hand-made items from Colombia. These are just a few of the many other fine artists and donators who will be at the event.
Carolyn Burger, in charge of the show, explained that 35 percent of the proceeds will go to the church’s operating fund. Tom Whitlock, who is known for making various wooden items, will donate 100 percent of sales to the church.
For the first time, a silent auction will also be held as part of the art and craft show featuring two hand-made wooden rocking horses made by Frank Brown. The minimum bid for each horse is $500. Bids can be made from Feb. 10 through Feb. 17. The winner will be announced at 12:30 p.m. on the 17. The horses can be seen and bid on in the church’s Narthex. Brown said, “You have to see the horses to appreciate them. Anybody from age three to about 10 can ride on the horses.”
All proceeds from the rocking horses will also go to the church’s building fund.
Wanting to make something special for each of his grandchildren, Brown made a big doll house for one granddaughter and rocking horses for the others. He then made an airplane for his grandson. Two other granddaughters also wanted rocking horses. He was kept pretty busy with requests from the grandkids.
“I made one for friends that I didn’t charge them for, and when I moved here full time I made three at a time because it’s easier to make them that way. The rocker parts are made of oak and the remainder of the horse is made from pine. One is stained in natural color and the other has a walnut stain,” he said.
His original intention was to donate one rocking horse to the church, but his daughter wanted one. Unfortunately, she passed away in May before it was finished. Her son, Brown’s grandson, is 24 and currently serving in Iraq.
“I never had the chance to give the rocking horse to her,” he explained, “so now the church has two for the silent auction.”
Brown has also donated two horses to Habitat for Humanity, but has decided not to make any more.
Refreshments will be served during the arts and crafts show and the announcement of the winners of the silent auction.
