Regardless of the church you attend, you may not want to miss a group of five interdenominational mothers from Tampa, a praise and worship team called MOSAIC.
They will be leading the worship songs at the 9:00 a.m. contemporary service and the 10:30 a.m. traditional service this Sunday, Jan. 27 at Wesley United Church. Their denominations range from Catholic to Southern Baptist to Charismatic to Methodist. Their goal is not performing, but leading in worship and praising God.
The group came together in August 2002. According to Tia Larson, the group started with two sisters, Lisa Crawford and Laura Ralston. Then, Larson, Mary Ann Borden and Anne Wegge joined.
They began initially to minister to women in the community at weekly bible studies and served in the worship leading capacity for five years. After much praying, they took a step in faith and began to praise and worship God at other churches, women’s retreats, Christian organizations and wherever they felt God was leading them.
And just like the story of how they came together, it is interesting how they arrived at the name MOSAIC.
“It was revealed to us by God that each of us is an individual just as each letter that made up the word MOSAIC is and that each one of us also comprise our worship team,” Larson said. “We learned that the relationship between Moses and his brother Aaron, in the book of Exodus, were an effective team.”
Larson said her team, aside from being effective, is like a piece of artwork. Together, she said, the women can compensate for the weaknesses of one another and perform the work they have been called to do.
“Unlike each other, God gives us special and unique gifts as individuals,” Larson continued. “Then he carefully weaves them together for his own use. Each individual piece of mosaic tile is imperfect without the other pieces. But when combined and set, the mosaic becomes complete and whole.”
An energetic praise and worship team, one by one, they each felt God’s calling to minister together and grow stronger through the Gospel. Music is their vessel in reaching other women by praising and worshiping God.
Larson was born into a musical family and has been singing for many years. She can sing any vocal part and has a great ear for harmony. She also brings keyboard experience to the group.
Anne Wegge studied piano for more than 10 years and has more than 25 years of experience. She also accompanies the group and supports them on vocals.
Since early childhood, Lisa Crawford has been drawn to worship music. She has the gift of songwriting and acoustic guitar playing and is instrumental in researching new music and making music selections.
One of the group’s primary leaders is Laura Ralston. Her clarity and strength is an anchor for the group’s tight harmonies, according to the group’s website.
Last but not least is Mary Ann Borden, a multifaceted woman who enjoys playing the drums, clarinet and piano as well as contributing her vocals to MOSAIC.
They are distinctly different from one another, but one thing draws them together.
“In the midst of it all, we realize God’s grace, mercy and love are too great for us not to share and celebrate with other women,” Larson said. “It’s been interesting and fun because it’s not about denominations, but worshiping God. We love what we do.”
