Bill Van Glabek, City Racquet Club supervisor, found the Firecracker Tennis Spectacular on Saturday a rousing success.

Following the fireworks the day before, 48 tennis players caused their own sparks as they competed in a compass draw.

“Depending on whether they won, competitors moved to different points on a compass,” Van Glabek said. “Each match consisted of four games, plus a tiebreaker if needed. Within a few rounds everyone found their competitive level.”

Overall there were 53 matches.

In the finals, Alain Poupart teamed with Linda Grossman, defeating George and Maria Hayden for the East title.

John Moulton and Ricki Levine downed Tom Chrobak and Brenda Reilley for the Northeast win.

In the South, Walt Drummond and Leslie Van Boven won over Roberto Percolli and Jacki Pham.

The Southeast titlists were Mike and Pam Yant, over Lou Cerachio and Karina Pappe.

In the North it was Brock Wilson and Nancy Embree topping Nick Nicolson and Rachael Schenk.

The West winners were Nick and Emillio Pantner over Bob Ash and Sally Bhavnani.

The Southwest title went to Raul Vallez and Joe Colletta over Phil and Martha Spaulding. The Northwest went to Mike Litt and Sheila Adams, who won over John Matthews and Marilyn Debbs.
