The ball moves quickly, flying off walls and shots come flying at the goal. It is not your regular soccer game.
It is the YMCA Indoor Soccer League, played on Sunday mornings in the YMCA gym.
“Guys would play pickup games at lunch or on Sunday mornings for fun,” Tom Garousi said. “We’ve been wanting to do this for some time and I was able to put it together with help.”
Ed Ehlen jumped in, paying for two teams. Adamo Carvelli of DaVinci’s jumped in, fielding a team and with Tony Smith helping with officiating and running the league.
There are eight teams and two waiting in the wings.
Games are 5-on-5, including goalies. There are two 20-minute periods, with a five-minute break in between. Age of players is 16 to 50. The majority of the players are in their mid-to-late 20s.
“The games are intense and very competitive,” Garousi said. “There are some really talented players.”
In the first three weeks Collier 1 and the Red Devils have shown their early prowess, winning all their games. Collier 1 has scored 19 goals, while giving up 8. The Red Devils have split the net 16 times, while giving up 8 goals.
F.C. Marco is next at 2-1, with 12 goals and giving up 7. F.C. Marco gave up five goals in its 5-3 loss to Collier 1.
Ehlen Strikers 1 and A. C. Da Vinci are 1-1-1, Ehlen Firestorms 2 are 1-2, and Collier 2 and R.M. Technologies are 0-3.
Games this Sunday are: Collier 1 and A.C. DaVinci at 9 a.m., Collier 2 and R.M. Technologies at 10 a.m., Red Devils and Ehlen Firestorms 2 at 11 a.m. and F.C. Marco and Ehlen Strikers 1 at noon.
