Marco Island’s Kit Fowler pitched and ran well, but his hitting cost him a win at the Florida Marlins Team Championship in the Major League Baseball/Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run Competition at the Florida Marlins diamond in Miami on Saturday.
In his 13-14-year-old age group, Fowler won the pitching contest, hitting the target five of six times. His base running from second base to home plate also was a very competitive time of 7.63 seconds. But his longest hit was 192 feet, with the winning distance being 270 feet, good enough to give the overall title to Reinaldo Ramirez of Miami.
Marco’s Jonathon Irigoyen came in fourth in his 9-10-year-old class.
The competitors got to meet Marlins outfielder Luis Gonzalez and were introduced before the Marlins game.
“It was a real good experience,” Fowler said. “It was cool to be on the field and be introduced to the crowd. I would like to be a professional baseball player.”
Fowler and Irigoyen both won sectional championships, held on Marco on May 17, among competitors coming from Charlotte, Lee and Collier Counties. Their scores were matched against other sectional winners in South Florida before being chosen for the Marlins Team Championship Competition.
Only the top scores at the Marlins competition on Saturday will be matched against other baseball markets to see who goes to the finals during the Major League Baseball All-Star game in New York City in July.
