Kids took a double splash at the YMCA last week. They dove into swim class and then computer class to write their own “book” on their swimming experience.
The Computer-Swim Class, headed by Wesley Blassneck — a top Lely High swimmer — led Manatee and Marco students in picking up techniques in both during the two-week class that ended Friday.
“When the program started two weeks ago many of the kids were afraid to let go of the wall (of the swimming pool),” Blassneck said. “At the end they were swimming on their own, swimming at least 12 yards, using freestyle strokes.” The class also was introduced to breast, back and butterfly strokes and diving.
“The book helped them gain a better understanding of computers and grammar,” Blassneck said.
In each book they wrote their goals for success, who was their role model, recorded their own times in the various strokes in the pool and created their own cover page, with photos of themselves in different aspects of the course.
“They learned how to type and make graphics, plus getting over their fear of water,” Blassneck said.
It appears the class got into the swim of things.
