Collier commissioner Fiala wins third term
No one files to oppose her
“Hooray” is what Collier County Commissioner Donna Fiala said when she learned Friday that she had no opposition for her third term.
Deadline for filing was Friday and Fiala went unopposed.
County Commissioner Tom Henning also won re-election due to no opposition, while Commissioner Jim Coletta will be involved in a Republican primary.
Coletta faces Republican Robert Alonso in the primary and the winner goes against Democrat Russell Kish in the general election.
Fiala represents Marco Island, Goodland and East Naples. Fiala was opposed by six candidates in her first election run, but the last two have been a lock.
“I think people have really been paying attention to county government and realize that I am fighting for them.” Fiala said.
“Whoopee,” said Shirlee Barcic, chairwoman of Fiala’s Marco Island Advisory Committee when learning of Fiala’s early election.
“Needless to say I am thrilled to death that Donna doesn’t have to go through the rigors of a campaign. People realize we already have the best person for the job.”
The committee is made up of Marco, Goodland, Isles of Capri and Fiddlers Creek constituents who advise Fiala on the various communities’ concerns.
“Donna listens to all her people,” Barcic said. “She listens and gets behind them 100 percent. She has been terrific for Marco Island. I’ve never known a commissioner that takes everyone to heart the way she does.”
Fiala said, “I am very involved with the community, with office hours on Marco. I meet with people and research issues where they have concerns. The committee also keeps me abreast of concerns. I look out for their interest, I am not in this position for myself.”
