Rookies, Nacho Mama’s win Senior Softball titles

The Marco Island Men’s Senior Softball League completed its regular season and began playoff games this week.
Rookies won the Marco Division and Nacho Mama’s won the Island Division.
Here is Commissioner Bill Shurina’s report on the last games of the season and the start of the playoff contests.
Island League:
Sand Bar, 12, Bertram Orthopaedics, 1
Winning pitcher Jim George gave up a run to Bertram’s in the first inning on a RBI by John Derosa, then proceeded to shut them out the rest of the game. Art Weins drove in three runs on two hits. Ron Shudes had two RBI on three hits, including a solo home run. Dick Knothe and Murph Knapke each had three hits, while George and Rich Schiller each had two hits, including triples each and a RBI each for Sand Bar.
Nacho Mama’s, 15, Sand Bar, 10
Nacho’s opened up a 9-0 lead over Sand Bar then rallied to close out the game. Sand Bar had cut the lead to 11-10 before Nacho’s scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn its 20-win season. Nacho’s major contributors were Mike Hopkins, two hits and four RBI, Joe Cervelli and Clay Zyerveld with three hits and three RBI, John Luegering three hits and two RBI and Bill Shurina four hits and one RBI. Art Weins who had a three-run home run and Rich Schiller who drove in four runs on a double and a triple, led Sand Bar.
Moose, 8, Cedar Bay, 7
Moose held off a seventh-inning rally to edge Cedar Bay. Tom Pugh’s two-run double moved Cedar Bay to within one at 8-7 before the Moose closed teh door in the seventh. Dom Fiorda, John Cavanagh, and Bob Kirsinger each had tow hits each, with Cavanagh driving in a run. Ron Hobson had two RBI and Tom Angelo slammed a home run for the Moose. Cedar Bay’s other runs came on RBI hits from Ralph Leiterding, Bob Levassuer, Bernie Seidman, and a Craig Cunningham triple.
Nacho Mama’s, 15, Cedar Bay, 2
Nacho Mama’s ended the season on a winning note. John Luegering was the catalyst with three hits and four RBI. Doug Tuttle had two hits and drove in three runs. Ray Niemeyer, Bill Shurina, and Dave Coward had three hits, with Shurina and Coward each having a RBI. Winning pitcher Jerry Cnudde lost his attempt at a consecutive shut out game when Steve Sayre and Jim Lattimore drove in runs in the last inning for Cedar Bay.
Sand Bar, 7, Bertram Orthopaedics, 6
Sand Bar earned its win by scoring four runs in the sixth. Bertram’s had opened a 6-3 lead behind John DeRosa’s two hits and three RBI. Al Cenicola and Nicks Brooks also knocked in Bertram’s runs. Jack O’Brien slammed two triples, the key being a three-run triple in the sixth, giving the Sand Bar the win. Ron Shudes, Rich Schiller, and Art Weins all knocked in runs for Sand Bar.
Sand Bar, 10, Moose, 2
Sand Bar’s Jack O’Brien continued to pound the ball, having two hits including another triple and two RBI. Art Weins had two hits and two RBI, while Art Fletcher and George Schnorr drove in two runs. The Moose runs were scored on a triple by John Remhoff, who had two hits and a sacrifice fly from Jimmy Cuevas.
Marco Division Playoff Games:
Marco Community Bank, 5, Cathy O’Clarke’s, 4
In a pitcher’s duel through the first six innings, Bob Zinkevicz of Marco Community Bank and Roger Wise of Cathy O’Clarke’s only allowed two runs. The Banks runs were scored by Bruce Steele and Steve Slaggie, while the O’Clarke’s runs were scored on doubles by Bill Dauch and Tony Meilan. In the top of the seventh O’Clarke’s scored two runs on RBI hits from Wise and George Bennett. The Bank responded by scoring three runs to win in the bottom of the seventh. Keith Stought drove in the first run, Don Wetzel the tying run and Steele the winning run.
ADKOS, 16, Capt Brien’s, 4
ADKOS was red hot, scoring 15 runs in the first four innings. Dave Coward led the attack with three hits and four RBI. Chet Dal Bianco had three hits and three RBI, Pat Coraggio three hits and a RBI, and George Dempsey and George Kirk drove in two runs each for ADKOS. Capt Brien’s turned in a triple play in the first inning defensively. O’Brien’s scoring came from Jake Jacobson with two RBI and Ray Zielinski and Leroy Fishleigh knocking in a run each. . The final regular-season standings:
Island Division, Nacho Mama’s, 21-9, Moose, 18-12, Sand Bar, 14-16, Cedar Bay, and Bertram Orthopaedics, each 11-19.
Marco Division, Rookies, 15-7, Crazy Flamingo and ADKOS, 12-10, Marco Community Bank, 10-12, Cathy O’Clark’es, 9-13, Capt. Brien’s, 8-14.
