Charter School has busy sports week
Marco Island Charter Middle School had a busy sports week.
The boys baseball team won its first game. The girls soccer team won two of three games and the track team ran into stiff competition.
The Eagles bats came alive in a 15-3 win over First Baptist Academy (FBA). Patrick Doyle pitched nearly four scoreless innings to gain the win. Hayden Hanscom followed, with Luke Bergen the stopper, getting the last five outs on strikeouts. Bergen also cranked out a home run for the 1-2 Eagles.
Matt Gerhardstein, slammed out fours hits, including two triples, a double and single, knocking in six runs. Hanscom, Kenny Moss, Kit Fowler, Alex Jarrett, Patrick Doyle and Joe Marinaro added hits. Marc Milk and Reno Landers did a great job behind the plate, manager Alex Galiana said.
The JV team notched its third victory, downing Seacrest, 15-7. Earlier in the week, the JV team blanked First Baptist Academy, 6-0, while the varsity lost, 11-1, to Community School of Naples.
For the varsity, Kit Fowler struck out five batters in three innings, but four errors led to six unearned runs to key Community School’s win.
JV standouts have been Sean Lampos, Greg Trzyna, Jeff Leonia, Paul Grisko, Corey Snyder, Sam Huettel, Will Bott, Adam Hurdis and Areeb Chaudhry.
Due to Easter break, the next varsity game is at Community School April 9. The varsity and JV teams play at home April 19, which is Homecoming Day, at the field behind Tommie Barfield Elementary School. The JV game begins at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity game.
The girls varsity soccer team defeated Seacrest, 5-0 and First Baptist Academy, 1-0, before losing to Community School, 2-0. The Eagles record is 2-1-1.
Against Seacrest, Marissa Anguilano, Amanda Lopez, Dulce Olalde, Jenna Luindquist and Natascha Schenk scored goals.
“The entire team played well and we dominated the entire match,” coach Jackie Sauter said.
In a very close game against FBA, with wind a factor, the Eagles persevered, with Jenna Lundquist kicking in the only goal of the game with 10 minutes remaining. Katie Roche and Liana Criscouli played well in the net, with Criscouli making a game-saving stop on a penalty kick.
In a very competitive game, the varsity fell to Community School, 2-0.
“It was a pretty even, aggressive game and we had many chances, but were just unlucky,” Sauter said. “We had a few girls missing and I was very proud of how our girls played, they never gave up.”
The JV team was 1-1 for the week. It tied FBA, 1-1 and edged Community School 1-0 to bring its record to 2-1-1. Amanda Marinaro got the winning goal against Community School. Also playing well for the JV team are Franchesca Archacki, Claudine Bolsen and Catherine Remaks.
Sauter cited both teams for their strong defensive play.
The track and field team ran into some outstanding talent in the Collier County Middle School Track & Field Meet at Lely High on Saturday.
Charter’s Katie Hogan won the shot put and Amanda Marinaro was fourth in the 3200. Mary Ellen Morris was fifth in the discus as the two larger teams, Naples and Oak Ridge, dominated.
“Our kids are having fun and learning,” Raymond said. “Since we don’t have a track it is really hard to have a concept of how far 400 meters is and how to pace on a full track.”
With this being Easter break for Charter School there are no sport team events this week.
