In possibly the closest games of the season in the Minor Division of the Marco Island Baseball League, the Cubs remained undefeated, but didn’t win and the Dodgers won their first game of the year.

Here’s board member Bill Hollowsky’s report.

Cubs 5, Indians, 5

The Indians jumped on the Cubs for five runs in the first three innings, looking like the Cubs would suffer their first defeat. Raul Rodriguez slammed a two-run triple and run-scoring singles by Peter Servante, Jake Golec and Nick Jones made it 5-0. A diving catch by Rodriguez stopped a Cubs rally, but in the fifth they plated five runs to tie the game.

With the time limit nearly up, the Cubs loaded the bases, but Indians reliever Cole Cleary shut the door, ending the game at 5-5.

Indians coach Bill Hollowsky complimented both teams. “It was a great game for the kids,” he said. It came down to the wire and everyone gave it their best. You could feel the tension and excitement in the stands.”

Dodgers, 6, Marlins, 4

Trevor Dye slammed a three-run homer to give the Marlins the early lead, but the Dodgers stormed back to score six runs and take a 6-3 lead.

With time again running out, The Marlins had runners on second and third base when Dodgers pitcher Tyler Grisham threw a wild pitch. A heads-up play saw Dodger catcher Anthony Macchiarolo retrieve the ball and toss to Grisham for the third out to end the inning and the Marlins chances for the win.

Dodgers coach Kevin Hennings said, “The whole team really came together. It was one of those games where they played solid fundamentals, with no mistakes.

Yankees, 17, White Sox, 15

In a wildly-contested game the Yankees hitters slammed five home runs to edge the White Sox in the Rookie Division.

Matt Keegan, Hawkin and Spencer Jenkins, Zach West and Howie Jordan all hit home runs, with Jordan’s being a grand slam. Cameron Jones, Brian Kocak, Jordan and Keegan each had three hits, while Jay Vanderjagt, the Jenkins, West and Joey Golec had two hits each. The White Sox coach did not give a report.

Yankees coach Brian Kocak said, “We still have work to do defensively, but we were happy with how we hit today.”

In another Rookie Division game, the Astros downed the Mets, 7-5, but neither coach gave a report on the game.

Rookie standings show the Yankees hold a slight lead at 5-2, followed by the Astros, 4-2-1, Mets, 3-4 and White Sox, 1-5-1.

In the Minor Division the Cubs are 6-0-1, Marlins, 4-3, Indians, 2-4-1 and Dodgers, 1-6.

The Dodgers play the Indians at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Tommie Barfield Elementary School.

Saturday games at 8:30 a.m. at Winterberry Park have the Pirates playing the Angels, the Red Sox battling the Braves and at the same time the Astros going against the White Sox at Tommie Barfield. The 9:45 a.m. games at Winterberry Park feature the Yankees playing the Mets and the Cubs battling the Marlins.
