Robert L. Mahr, DVM, received the Distinguished Veterinary Alumnus Award from Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine.
After his graduation in 1960, he went on to found Northwest Veterinary Associates in the Chicago area. It was made up of multiple veterinary practices and real estate and, at one point, was the largest small-animal practice in Illinois. This corporation also provided the northwest Chicago suburbs with round-the-clock emergency service for 22 animal hospitals, in addition to the ones he owned.
During his time as a practicing veterinarian he placed great emphasis on the importance of the human-animal bond and partnered with local animal shelters and animal control staff to teach people about responsible pet ownership. He has written on this subject, as well, publishing the "Pet Owners Pledge" and "A Strategy for Preventing Companion Animal Abuse."
He was actively involved for many years with the Illinois and Chicago Veterinary Medical Associations, the Chicago Anticruelty Society, the Stray Halfway House, and with animal control for several Illinois cities.
Dr. Mahr now resides in Bonita Springs, Fla., and continues to be active in his community.
The award was conferred during the college's commencement ceremony on May 2 in East Lansing, Michigan.
