Nail biters feature of Marco baseball games
Nail biters were again the feature of Marco Baseball League games last weekend.
In the Minor Division the Indians edged the Dodgers, 13-12 and the Cubs slipped by the Marlins, 8-5 to stay undefeated.
In the Rookie Division, the Yankees put on a last-inning rally to nip the Mets, 14-13 and the White Sox slipped by the Astros, 13-12.
Indians, 13, Dodgers, 12
The Indians built a 10-2 lead, but the Dodgers never quit.
The Indians put five runs on the board in the first inning, but the Dodgers came back with two runs in the second. The Indians turned their offensive power back on for five runs, led by Cole Cleary’s home run, making it seem like an insurmountable lead of 10–2.
The Dodgers bounced back when Nolan Poole slammed a home run, making the score 10-5, but the Indians piled on three more to make it 13-5. Yet, the Dodgers kept coming, closing the gap to 13-9, on runs scored by Jacob Olguin, Justin Rhymer and Zachary Rodriguez. Dodgers pitchers Marcus Seidman and Tyler Grisham silenced the Indians’ bats, while hits by Kevin Hennings and Seidman pulled the Dodgers within one run at 13-12.
But, like last week, the Indians put Cole Cleary back on the mound to close out the game.
Indians coach Bill Hollowsky said, “It was definitely our best game of the year. Everyone came out hitting and executing every aspect of the game. We got to introduce new pitchers, Nick Jones, Jacob Olszewski, and Vincent Rives to the mound. We are so proud of the whole team and the amazing comeback of the Dodgers.”
Dodgers Coach Kevin Hennings said, “Playing this game tonight was all about the kids. We had kids get their first hits and score their first runs of the season. It was just amazing to see their happiness.”
Cubs, 8, Marlins, 5
The Cubs remain undefeated as they took an early lead and held off the Marlins. There was no report on how the runs were scored.
Cubs Coach Andy Delgado said, “Nick Priscoe pitched a great game and Andrew Delgado had three RBIs.” Delgado was really proud of Colin Brown who had to fill-in as catcher for the first time this season. “Colin pulled through for us,” Delgado said.
Yankees, 13, Mets, 13
The Yankees again won a slugfest. In the last two games the Yankees have scored 31 runs.
But it wasn’t easy. Runs were scored in every inning.
Each team scored a run in the first inning, with the Yankees run coming on a Brian Kocak single.
The Mets coach did not report how the runs were scored, but the Mets plated five in the second to go ahead 6-1, only to see the Yankees score three times on hits by Matt Keegan, Jay Vanderjagt, Spencer and Hawkin Jenkins and Cameron Jones.
The Yankees tied the game in the third on a Kocak hit and a Michael Sciola home run. The Mets again took the lead with four runs, while the Yankees battled back with three.
With the Mets leading 13-9 in the last inning, the Yankees Vanderjagt jump-started the final rally with a home run. Howie Jordan blasted the game winner, a three-run home run.
“Both teams played great,” said Yankees coach Brian Kocak. “It was our greatest win of the season.”
White Sox, 13, Astros, 12
The White Sox edged the Astros, 13-12. Neither coach reported on the game.
The Rookie Division standings show the Yankees improving their lead to 6-2, followed by the Astros at 4-3-1, Mets, 4-4 and White Sox, 2-5-1.
In the Minor Division the Cubs are 7-0-1, Marlins, 4-4, Indians, 3-4-1 and Dodgers, 1-7.
The Indians play the Marlins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Tommie Barfield Elementary, while the
Braves battle the Pirates and the Angels go against the Red Sox in 8:30 a.m. games on Saturday at Winterberry Park. The Yankees play the Astros at the same time at Tommie Barfield. The Mets play the White Sox and the Dodgers go against the Cubs, with both games at 9:45 a.m. at Winterberry Park.
An umpire’s mask and chest protector is missing after a game at Tommie Barfield on Saturday morning after a Minor game. Contact Bill Hollowsky if you have any information, or found the equipment, at 595-3239.
