A dynamic, colorful Lely High School Swim and Dive Records Board adorns the wall near the gymnasium, showing how good its recent crop of swimmers has done. Particularly the girls. Especially Wesley Blassneck and Mercedes Farhat of Marco Island.

Blassneck, a junior, holds three individual records, while Farhat, a senior, holds two.

They join senior Ling Su and junior Louisa Farhat for three more relay marks. That means the recent group holds eight of the 13 records.

“They have been just outstanding,” retiring coach Carl Kolling said. “They not only hold the records, but they have beaten them several times.”

Only Jennifer Johnson, who holds three records, and Christine Fort, holding the two oldest ladies marks, set in 1987, are on the board. Fort’s records are in diving, a specialty Lely has been missing for some time.

On the boys side, sophomore Harry Stephenson holds two records, breaking his own marks a number of times.

The oldest record belongs to former Marco swimmer George Frazier. It was the 100 breaststroke, set in 1984, in a time of 1:021.13.

The plates on the board are removable, which Kolling expects may happen with some marks next swim season.

“These group of girls have shown tremendous talent,” he said. “With Wesley, Mercedes and Louisa swimming together at a young age on Marco they had an incredible advantage and have made the most of their talents.”

Funds for the board came from the swim team’s fund-raising efforts.
