I want to thank everyone who took part in the Southwest Florida Soapfest held at Vandy’s 5 Brothers and the Marco Island Princess last weekend.

Everyone who attended commented on what a wonderful experience it was to meet the daytime soap stars from “As the World Turns,” “Guiding Light” and “All My Children.”

Partial proceeds from this event help to fund the summer Children’s Theater Camp at the Marco Island YMCA.

The “Y” will host a June Gymnastics program taught by Kamal Farhat. Kamal was on the national team for his home country of Libya where he trained for the Olympic Games. The program focuses on strength, balance and grace needed for gymnastics. Participants will learn tumbling and apparatus skills for beam, vault and bar. This program is open to boys and girls ages 3 to 16 and is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting June 3. The time of the program is 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the YMCA Gym. Fee for members of the “Y” is $80, for others $100.

Swim lessons with Dottie are scheduled from June 2 through June 12. All classes meet Monday thru Thursday for two weeks. The initial class is Parent/Child, held from 5:30 to 6 p.m. This initial program is for children ages 6 months to 3 years old. This program helps the child get adjusted to the water and teaches water safety for the parent.

Other swim classes available include Pike/Eel- Ray/Starfish- Guppy/Minnow and Fish/Flying Fish and Shark. Pike is for children age 3 and older. The child will advance through the different levels and learn additional pool techniques at each level. Cost for members is $50, others $70 and Marco Island residents may receive a $10 discount for youth swimming lessons through funds provided by the City of Marco Island.

I mentioned earlier about the Marco Island YMCA Summer Theater Camp. The camp returns for its seventh season. There will be a workshop and three productions scheduled. Workshop includes all the elements of theater: voice control and volume, stage presence, body positioning, taking direction and theater lingo.

Everyone is cast and major parts are auditioned. Week 1 is the “Action Stage Right Theater Workshop” scheduled from June 2 to 6. Time is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Workshop cost is $80 for members and $90 for others.

The scheduled play for week 2 is “Clue.” Practice is from June 16 to 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the production on June 21.

Week 3 brings us the production of “Hercules” scheduled from July 14 to 18 and the production on July 19. Production week is also 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Week 4 is practice for the hilarious Broadway and movie written by Mel Brooks called “The Producers.” The play production week is August 11 to 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the production scheduled for August 16.

The director of the camp is Gina Sisbarro and the location of the camp and productions is the beautiful Marco Players Theater located in the Marco Town Center. This program is open to children ages 7 to 16. The fee for the productions is $130 for members and $150 for others. This fee is per production.

For more information on these programs and all the programs the Marco Island YMCA has to offer please check the Web site at www.marcoislandymca.org or stop by at 101 Sandhill Street, Marco Island. Remember, the Marco YMCA is the “Y” for all of Marco Island, the 951 corridor up to State Rt. 41 and south to Everglades City, Chocoloskeee and the Port O the Islands.

Hope to see you at the “Y”
