The inaugural season of the Marco Island Cal Ripken Baseball League concluded with a whopping closing ceremony on Saturday.
It included individual recognition for each of the participants, games and treats.
“Our inaugural season was a huge success,” said Andy Delgado, league president. “We had over 160 kids participate and dozens of volunteer parents, brothers and sisters. The initiation and success of the Marco Island Cal Ripken Baseball League proved to everyone that Marco Island is a family and kid-oriented community.”
Boys and girls, 4 to 12, participated in divisions, separated by age and skills. The league, including umpires, was operated completely by volunteers.
“I would like to thank all the parents for believing in our league and the children for their participation,” Delgado said. “I can’t tell you how many e-mails, phone calls and handshakes I received, thanking me for not only starting the baseball league, but for what an incredible difference they have noticed in their children’s ability and attitude towards baseball.
“I would also like to thank the Marco Eagle for following us all season. Great job.”
League board member Bill Hollowsky provided results and often photos to go into the coverage provided by the Eagle. Sandy Wheeler, freelance photographer for the Eagle, also supplied photos.
