Lely golfers top Golden Gate

Lely High’s top three scores beat the best score by a Golden Gate player as the Trojans evened its season record to 1-1. Geoff Stephenson was medalist with a low score of 38 for the nine-hole match. He was followed by teammate Tim Prior, 42, Ethan Hilliard, 44 and Greg Hauze, 47, for a team total of 171. Full story »

The Lely High golf teams lost in their season openers on Thursday. The boys all had decent rounds, each shooting in the 40s for nine holes, but Palmetto Ridge had two boys in the 30s and two in the low 40s to win at Valencia Golf and Country Club. Full story »

On May 15, 1959, it was opening day for the Walker Cup, a biennial affair between amateurs from the U.S. doing battle with golfers from Britain and Ireland. His vision: create an executive course that would have the added attraction of being lit up for night golfing, just like one of his ventures in Tampa. Then, make it cheap.
